Training Compassion: The Official Guide to CBCT®

Compassion is the warm-hearted concern that unfolds when we witness the suffering of others and feel motivated to relieve it. Research suggests that compassion is innate and that any of us can strengthen this capacity through deliberate practice, with benefits for self, for others, and for society. In this ground-breaking guide, Professor Lobsang Tenzin Negi offers a comprehensive method for training compassion. With over 25 years of monastic training and a doctorate from Emory University, Negi draws from the ancient Indo-Tibetan Buddhist teachings of lojong and combines them with insights from emotion science to create this multi-layered and practical approach. This guide is designed to accompany a CBCT course. CBCT, a program developed at Emory University, is appropriate for people of any or of no faith tradition who wish to strengthen their resilience and compassion. All CBCT courses are led by certified CBCT teachers. Learn more at compassionu.app.

The CBCT® Teacher Guide

The CBCT® Teacher Guide is designed to support certified teachers of the CBCT® (Cognitively Based Compassion Training) program. All CBCT courses are led by certified CBCT teachers. CBCT and its Teacher Certification program were developed by Professor Lobsang Tenzin Negi, PhD, founder and executive director of Emory University's Compassion Center. Guided by the shared vision of Emory and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, these programs support the Center's mission to promote human flourishing through educational programs, dialogue, and research. Through this guide, CBCT teachers can deeply familiarize themselves with the CBCT Model of Change, the trauma and resilience-informed pedagogy, and the constructivist approach, all central models that inform the facilitation of CBCT. This guide serves as a companion for teachers as it carefully walks through the main facilitation elements of a CBCT class and highlights important skills for teachers to cultivate and model in their teaching.
